Ramesh Preshan (Ramesh) (October 27, 1964 - September 27, 2025) is an Tamil Writer. He has written Poems, Short Stories, Novels, Dramas and Critical Essays. He is also known as Post modern literary writer and critic.

Birth, Education

Ramesh Predan was born to Marudhamuthu and Balasundharambal on October 27, 1964 in Pondicherry, a Union Territory of India. His native was Trichy. He studied from primary to secondary education in Puducherry Government Middle School and completed his higher eduction in V.O.C Govt Higher Secondary School. He finished his graduation from Galway College and secured a diploma in French Linguistics from Alliance Française. Later, he graduated his masters in M.A History from Annamalai University.

Literary Life

Ramesh Predan's Literary life had two phases.

Co Writing
With Charu Nivedita

In 1993, he wrote the novel "Pudhaikkapatta Pradhigalum ezhudhapatta manidhargalum", along with Prem. He wrote short stories under the name Predho-Predan. He continued writing under the name Ramesh Prem. This was his first work. He continued to write theory books and poems. Apart from translations, he co-authored 21 books with Prem. His works have been published in the magazines Kiranam, Niraprigai, Sidhaivu, Amoeba, Kalachuvadu, Uyirmai, Theeranadhi and Solpudhidhu. During this period, Charu Nivedita also worked with them. They were pioneers of postmodern writing in Tamil.

Independent Writing

After separating from Prem in 2010, Ramesh continued to write under the name Ramesh Predan. In 2013, he suffered a stroke and was confined to bed ever since. But he continued to write poems, essays and novels until his last day with the same vigour. During this phase of his writing, his works depicted historical and philosophical undertones.

Death

Ramesh Predan passed away on September 27, 2025, in Puducherry due to health issues. Ramesh had severe blood pressure problems from birth and had been bedridden since 2013 after suffering a stroke.

Memorial

In 2025, Ramesh Predan's Vishnupuram Award was presented to five writers in his memory. Devi Lingam, Selvakumar Pechimuthu, Agaliya Manavalan, Saju and Ashok Ramraj received the awards.

Literary Place

Ramesh Predan was one of the pioneers of postmodernist thought and aesthetics in Tamil. He wrote poems that were characterized by postmodern aesthetics like Surrealism with grotesque elements and Fragmented narration. He wrote novels that incorporated different cultural references and an illogical structure that layered and dissolved them. He wrote essays introducing and explaining postmodern ideas.

Ramesh Predan was the first to expand postmodern ideas and aesthetics to adapt it in the Tamil context. Ramesh considered Tamil culture, and more broadly Indian culture, as constructing a Tamil body and an Indian body, and through these constructions, exerting violence on each body as a way of exercising power. This perspective of body politics formed one of the fundamental bases of his writing. He stated that the nature of his writing lay in the liberation of the body, the sensuality of the body, and the metaphysics of the body.

Writer Jeyamohan evaluates his writings as - “Prem and Ramesh were among the key people who introduced postmodern thought into Tamil and created a space for debate. Their efforts helped destabilize a Tamil literary environment filled with tightly unified forms, emotionless introspective voices, and a modernist focus on the history-less individual, and guided it toward new terrains.” and “Avan Peyar Sol is a work composed of all the fundamental elements that constitute postmodern novels - the sorrow of solitude, unrestrained madness, cruelties, absurdities, and emotional turmoils. This novel by Ramesh Predan can be classified as advancement of J.J. Silakuripugal”
