Vasant Shinde

Vasant Shinde (born: June 15, 1956) is an Indian Archeologist. He was one of the archeologists to have worked in the excavations of Rakhigarhi during 2011 - 2016. He was the first to restructure the research relating to the Harappan Skulls and to emphasize the importance of genetic testing in excavations.

Birth, Education

Vasant Shinde was born on June 15, 1956 in Pune, Maharashtra. He completed his Bachelors in History from Pune University. He completed his Masters in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archeology with First Class from Pune University. He received his Doctorate for his research work on ‘Ancient History: Early Settlements in the Central Tapi Basin’. He did his Post Doctoral Research at the National Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark during 1985 and at Cambridge University during 1989 - 1990. He was conferred with Honorary D.Lit Degree by Vikramshila University.

Professional Life

  • He worked as a Professor in Deccan College, Pune in the Department of Archeology since 1982 for the students of Masters Degree and from 1995 for Research Students.
  • He worked as a Professor in Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth University from 1987 - 1995 for Students of Masters Degree.
  • From 1991, He worked as a Professor in Institute of Archeology, New Delhi for Students of Masters Degree.
  • Under his guidance, many research students from Deccan College, Pune have received their Doctorate Degree. Since 2008, he has been guiding research students of Eotvos Lorand University of Sciences, Hungary as well.
  • He was a Visiting Professor in International Research Centre for Japanese Studies and Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto, Japan.

Organizational Activities

  • Founder of Society of South Asian Archaeology
  • He was actively engaged in Public Archaeology. He established groups in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Haryana to protect the Nation's cultural heritage and to create awareness amongst the people.

Research

  • He was involved in the excavations of Tapi Basin during 1980-90.
  • During 2006-11 he was involved in the excavations of Rakhigarhi of Indus Valley Civilization.

In 2019, He submitted a research paper on 'An Ancient Harappan Genome Lacks Ancestry from Steppe Pastoralists or Iranian Farmers' along with David Reich. Through this he concluded that the people of Indus Valley Civilization belong to the Indo-Aryan family and not the descendants of Anatolian Steppe ancestry. This questioned the widely believed Indo-Aryan migration theory.
