Selventhiran (22.08.1982) is a Tamil writer and speaker. He started his career as a journalist and subsequently worked as a media coordinator.

Personal Life

Selvendiran was born on August 22, 1982 in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district to Kathiresan and Mercy Papa as their youngest son. He has two brothers and two sisters. He studied up to 10th standard in Sathankulam Sacred Heart Boys School, but had to discontinue education at this point due to family circumstances and started working with his father in a matchbox factory. He enrolled in the Continuing Education Program offered by Annamalai University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. He is married to Thirukkuralarasi and has two daughters, Ilaveyini and Ilampirai.

Literary Activities

In his youth, Selventhiran created and circulated a handwritten journal called "Cembulam".

From 2004-2008 Selventhiran worked for Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan's circulation division and from 2009-2020 for the sales and distribution division of The Hindu (English). He wrote articles on politics, society and literature during this period.

Selventhiran is one of the coordinators of the Vishnupuram Literary Circle. He writes screenplays and dialogues for films and television programmes. He is involved with an organization called Arthamandapam that brings out biographies of prominent personalities in the fields of literature, business, cinema etc. Selventhiran has given many talks about reading, literature and sales.

Documentaries

He was involved in the making of J. Ajithan's documentary "Neer, Nilam, Neruppu" about writer B.Jeyamohan.

He directed the documentary "Nadhiyin Paadal" about writer Vannadasan

Political Activities

Selventhiran was a strategic advisor to many political parties across the political spectrum.

"Solmugam"

Along with translator Naren, he organizes a literary meeting for readers called "Solmugam" in Coimbatore. They hold monthly meetings and discuss important works and writers of Tamil literature.

Literary Contributions

Selvendiran writes travel essays, self-help essays and social studies essays in a style that is subtle and satirical. Vaasippadhu Eppadi [How to Read] is a collection of essays on how to improve one's reading habit. He wrote it based on his own experiences as a reader. Paalai Nila Payanam is a travelogue that details a travel from Jaipur, Rajasthan to the Kutch region in Gujarat with writer Jeyamohan and twelve of his friends. The travel through the desert region, and the culture and history of various places along the route are described in this book. He has also published essays on entrepreneurship, ecology, journalism, and literature. Most of the articles were published in The Hindu (Tamil).
