He belonged to Thondayar tradition and ruled the Thondaiya nation with Kanchipuram as the capital. He took over a town namely Bavathiri, and ruled around Vada Venkatam.  His ancestors’ arrival via sea route, their Thirayar title (Thirai means sea wave) and their ruling can be found in Perumpanattrupadai.

Literary Life

The 185th song of Puranauru was written by Ilanthirayan. He wrote three songs in Natrinai (94, 99, 106). Ilanthirayan was the hero of the Perumpanattrupadai poems written by Kadiyalur Uruttirankannanar.
