Karattur Ramu (1934) was a Tamil novel written by Sitarammaya. It is an idealistic Gandhian novel about Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram.
Publication
Sitarammaya was initially in his son's Vegavathi Ashram in Andippatti, Madurai. Later, he moved to Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram. The backdrop of this novel is the Sabarmati Ashram; he mentions in the preface that the details are precisely like that of the Ashram's.
Synopsis
Ramu, a patriot, starts an ashram in Karattur. Everyone lives an ideal life there. The novel emphasizes adaptation of village lifestyle and the freedom of women.
Literary Significance
It is one of those novels in Tamil that represents Gandhian ideals. Although there were many Gandhian ashrams in Tamil Nadu, not many novels were written about them. This was the first novel that attempted to change it. Later, Jeyakanthan's novel Jaya Jaya Sankara depicted a Gandhian Ashram.
