Ukaikkudi Kizhar was a poet of the Sangam period. His poem is compiled in the Kurunthogai.

Private Life

Ukai is the amman pacharisi plant (Euphorbia hirta – a herbal plant). Ukaikkudi Kizhar was born in Ukaikudi, a town where Ukai plant was abundant. Kizhar was the special title bestowed by the king.

Literary Life

Ukaikkudi Kizhar composed the 63rd poem of Kurunthogai, one of the Ettuthogai (Eight Anthologies) books. It comes under category Paalaithinai. This verse comes under the genre of "the Hero speaking to his heart which had been made up to obtain wealth, 'To seek and earn wealth, you must leave your lover; it is difficult to part from her' and this prevents him from leaving".
