Aatrupadai is a Sitrilakiyam genre, known as Prabandham in Sanskrit. The word aatrupaduthudal means Ito lead or guide.I In ancient times, Viraliyar, Paanar, Koothar, and Porunar used to visit patrons who helped them out of poverty. A person who receives presents from a patron acts as a guide for the others, and Aatrupadai songs are composed for that occasion. The Aatrupadai songs are written in Agavarpa and portray the fame, patronage, and reign of the patron.[1]

Genre

Aatrupadai is defined by Tholkappiyam grammar as-artists like Koothar, Paanar, Porunar, and Viraliyar, after receiving gifts from a patron, guide the other artists by writing Aatrupadai songs[2]. Subsequent Paatiyal (Poetics) texts provide a similar grammar to Aatrupadai[3]. Apart from the Thirumurugatrupadai, other Aatrupadai texts have kings and patrons sung as protagonists (Thalaivan). Aatrupadai is composed of the Thalaivan's clan pride, charisma, dharma, heroism, etc.; the paths that lead to his kingdom; and finally, the types of gifts that will be received from him.
