Ilanthirayan was a poet of Sangam era and a king of Thondaiyar legacy. He was the Protagonist hero of Perumpaanaattrupadai collection of poems. Ilanthirayan’s verses are found compiled in Puranaanuru and Natrinai collections.
Biography
He belonged to the Thondayar lineage and ruled the Thondai region with Kanchipuram as its capital. He took over a town named Bavatthiri, and ruled around North Venkata regions. Through Perumpanattrupadai, we come to know that his ancestor's landed here through sailors' route hence ruled with the title 'thiraiyar' (Thirai means sea wave).
