Birth, Education
Udhayanan's birthname was Narasimhan. He was born on September 6, 1949 in Kanchipuram to Srinivasan from Andhra state and Srirangammal from Karnataka state. His father Srinvasan was the Dharmkartha [1]at a Perumal temple. He had eight siblings, six brothers and two sisters.
Udhayanan got his bachelor's degree from Pachaiyappa's college, Kanchipuram (now Chennai).
Personal Life
Udayanan has been working in the medical field in Chennai since 1971. In 1983, he married Vaidehi. He started publishing houses under his wife's name (Vaitehi Publishing) and his pen name (Udayanan Publishing). He published ten books, through them. He quit publishing due to heavy losses. His wife Vaidehi passed away in 2012.
Literary Life
Even as a student he was intrigued by the text Manonmaniyam and was inspired to write during college days. He then turned his attention towards historical romances. As a result, he chose his pen name 'Udhayanan'.
Udhayanan was greatly inspired by the writings of the Tamil writers Kalki and Sandilyan. With Sandilyan as his ideals, he wrote a number of historical romances. Writer Na. Parthasarathy's 'Ponvilangu' inspired him to write social novels and these novels resemble Na. Parthasarathy's prose style.
Udhayanan has written several historical novels based on Pallava history, that are set in places in and around Kanchipuram district because he was born there.
Three of his novels were published by Vanathy Publishing, one by Yazhini Publishing and all of his works were published by Gaura Publishing.
Udhayanan has written forty four books which include thirty three historical romances and fiction, six social novels, and several short story collections and essays collections.
Literary Significance
Udhayanan is one of the notable writers who wrote extensively researched historical fiction with Pallava history as its backdrop. His prose bears the influence of Kalki and Sandilyan. He wrote popular fantasy and adventure fiction.
