Ilanthirayan was a Sangam poet and a king of Thondaiyar tradition. He was the hero of ''Perumpanattrupadai'' collection of poems. Ilanthirayan’s poems are found in ''Purananuru'' and ''Natrinai'' collection of poems.

He belonged to Thondayar tradition and ruled the Thondaiya nation with Kanchipuram as the capital. He took over a town namely Bavathiri, and ruled around Vada Venkatam. His ancestors’ arrival via sea route, their Thirayar title (''Thirai'' means sea wave) and their ruling can be found in ''Perumpanattrupadai''.
