Uraiyur Appavusundaram Pillai (Kottaiyur Appavusundaram Pillai) (1893 – April 8, 1966) was a renowned Nathaswaram artist. Variously spelled as Nadaswaram, Nadhaswaram, Nataswaram and Nathaswaram, is a double reed wind instrument from South India. It is used as a traditional classical instrument in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala.

Youth, Education

Appavusundaram Pillai was born in 1893 to Krishna Pillai and Nagammal couple at Uraiyur, a part of Tiruchirappalli.

Appavusundaram Pillai's father became his first guru and taught him music. Ponnar Uraiyur Gopalswami trained Appavusundaram Pillai further in the musical instrument.

Personal Life

Appavusundaram Pillai's elder brother Duraiswamy went to Rangoon in his youth, lived there and died. Appavusundaram Pillai had a younger sister named Akilandam and a younger brother named Rajappa.

Appavusundaram Pillai married Annalakshmi, daughter of Uraiyur Muthuveeruswamy Pillai. They have no offsprings.

Musical Work

Once hearing Appavusundaram Pillai's concert in Ramanathapuram, Veenai Seshanna of Mysore took him to Mysore and made him stay there for several days and discussed music. Appavusundaram Pillai handled the Thimiri Nataswaram. His music was majestic. His techniques included finger works (viraladi)and quick modulations (piruga). He lived in Kottaiyur for some time due to the esteem in which he was held by the people of Nattukottai. Hence he was known as Kottaiyur Appavusundaram Pillai.

Demise

Appavusundaram Pillai died in Uraiyur on April 8, 1966.
