Suriyanarkoil Narayanaswamy Pillai (December 10, 1905 - October 19, 1973) was a Nadaswaram artist.

Birth, Education

Narayanaswamy Pillai was born on December 10, 1905 to Kuppuswamy Pillai and Parvathi Ammal in Suriyanarkoil (the abode of Sun God among the nine abodes of Navagrahas (nine celestial objects)) in Thanjavur district.

He first learned vocals from Bandanainallur Meenakshisundaram pillai. After Narayanaswamy learnt the hymns, his father realized that Narayanaswamy was more involved in Nadaswaram music and taught him how to play Nadaswaram.

Personal Life

Narayanaswamy Pillai had four brothers - Govindaswamy Pillai (Nadaswaram), Ramuppillai, Sarabamoorthy Pillai (Nadaswaram), Swaminatha Pillai (Nadaswaram), and a sister Dharmambal.

He married Soundaravalli Ammal, the eldest daughter of Needamangalam Meenakshisundaram Pillai. They had a daughter - Renu Kujambal and a son - Balasubramanian.

Music

Narayanaswamy Pillai started playing Nadaswaram with Thiruvaduthurai. N. Rajaratnam Pillai.

After ten years he started doing solo concerts. He has done many concerts with his youngest brother and student Swaminatha Pillai.

At one time in Kallupatti, Ramanathapuram district, a concert was arranged with Rettiyoor Subramania Pillai's Melam and Narayanaswamy Pillai's Nadaswaram. Rettiyoor Subramania Pillai played about an hour in the raga Huseni, which was known as the raga that could not be played for a long time, and then invited Narayanaswamy Pillai. Narayanaswamy Pillai continued playing the same Huseni raga for another two hours.

Narayanaswamy Pillai had been honored by many states with gifts such as sadaras and gold medals.

Death

Narayanaswamy Pillai died on October 19, 1973 in Suriyanarkoil.
