R. Ponnammal (born May 21, 1937) is a Tamil spiritual writer. She has authored many children's stories and biographies. R. Ponnammal has also written books about astrology.
Birth, Education
R. Ponnammal was born on May 21, 1937 in Tiruvallikeni, Chennai to Ramasubramaniam and Lakshmi. She finished eighth grade, and when the family moved to Kallidaikurichi,her studies came to an end. R. Ponnammal read magazines and taught herself language and literature.
Personal Life
R. Ponnammal married Ramasubramaniam in 1958. She learned Sanskrit and astrology with the help of her husband. R. Ponnammal’s son is Boston Balaji, a literary critic and editor of Solvanam online magazine.
Literary life
R. Ponnammal used to tell stories to her friends from a young age. She told a story to her friend Rukmini, and with her encouragement R. Ponnammal sent it to the short story competition run by Tamilnadu magazine. That story,Irattai Parisu in 1957, was awarded. She wrote stories like Anbumanam, Inparakasiyam, Vidi Sirittatu, Sandekappei and Kan Thiranthatu in Tamilnadu magazine. R. Ponnammal stopped writing when she got married and had children. After a long break, in 1976 she sent a short story called Kadavulin Karunai to a contest held by Dinamani daily magazine and the Tamil Nadu Children's Writers' Association and won.
R. Ponnammal, who had not written again for some time, won the gold medal in 1983 for her story Karuna Vizhikal in a short story competition organized by Gokulam Children's Magazine. She then went on to write children's stories, spiritual stories, and stories about the world of women. R. Ponnammal continued to write for children's magazines like Gokulam and spiritual magazines like Kamakodi.
The first book written by R. Ponnammal, Kadavulin Karunai, a collection of children's short stories, was published by Palaniappa Brothers. Her best book is considered Panduranga Mahimai, with over a thousand pages and was published by Giri Trading Company.
