S.V.Subramanian

S.V. Subramanian (Deceased January 12, 2017) was a Tamil scholar, educationist and a grammarian. He worked as a Lecturer and the Head of Department at the University College, Trivandrum. He also worked as a director at the World Tamil Research Institute, Chennai.

Birth, Education

S.V. Subramanian was born to Shanmuga Velayutham and Ramalakshmi in Veerakeralampudur, Tirunelveli District. He studied at St. Heart High School, Wickramasinghepuram and  Tirthapati Higher secondary School, Ambasamudram. He completed his intermediate at M.D.T. Hindu College and received his Bachelors (honors) degree from Annamalai University (1950-53). He obtained his PhD from Kerala University.

Personal Life

From 1953 to 1956 he started his career as a Tamil Instructor at V.O.C College, Thoothukudi and later worked as a lecturer at Thooya Saveriyar College, Palayamkottai and University College, Thiruvananthapuram. He later served as the Head of the Department of Tamil at Kerala University.

World Tamil Education Movement

Literary life

S.V. Subramanian, who worked as a Director at the World Tamil Research Institute, Chennai, has published research papers and grammar studies on Kambaramayanam and Silapathikaram. His book Tamil Nikandugal won the Tamil Valarchi Thurai (Tamil Development Department) Award. He published Veeramamunivar’s Thonnool Vilakkam.

He established Thiruvalluvar College in 1969 at Papanasam, Nellai District and handed it over to the administration of Kundrakudi Adhinam. Forty-four people obtained doctoral degrees under his guidance. He wrote 165 books in Tamil, 9 books in English and one book in Malayalam.

He bought several acres of land near Nellai and built a small town called Tamilur. There he founded the World Tamil Education Movement and established three libraries with 25000 books. He provided facilities for Tamil students to stay and do research. S.V. Subramaniam, who was interested in agriculture, also conducted agricultural diploma classes on his land for some time.

Death

S.V. Subramanian, who had been ill for some time after an accident, passed away on January 12, 2017.

Literary Significance

S.V. Subramanian was a researcher with a reverence that emerged from a serious passion for Tamil. Therefore, his studies are mostly from the perspectives of appreciation and glorification. He did not possess the objective vision or the method of researchers like S. Vaiyapuri Pillai or T.P. Meenakshisundaram Pillai. He traces the period of Tamil texts back thousands of years. His primary contribution was the commentary and publication of the texts of grammar.
