Priyamvada

Priyamvada (Born: October 14, 1982) is a literary translator and essayist. Priyamvada translates literary fiction from Tamil into English.

Birth, Education

Priyamvada was born on October 14, 1982 in Chennai to Ramkumar and Sujatha. Priyamvada completed her schooling at Vidya Mandir School, Mylapore, Chennai, and earned her B.Com bachelor's degree from Stella Maris College and an MBA degree from XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Personal Life

Priyamvada married Vijay Ranganathan on July 12, 2020. Priyamvada works for a private equity fund that focuses on investing for social impact. Through this venture, Priyamvada invests in commercially successful and socially relevant companies, and participates in the board of directors of such companies. Her husband, Vijay Ranganathan, who previously worked in an investment bank, is currently a screenwriter.

Literary Life

Priyamvada's debut work, Meendum Pudhiyavargalin Kathaigalaipatri (A review of the series 'Stories from Emerging Writers'), was published on writer Jeyamohan's website. In 2021, Priyamvada was selected to participate in the South Asia Speaks Fellowship Programme, a mentorship programme where she worked with Arunava Sinha. Priyamvada translated Jeyamohan's short story collection Aram as part of this programme, from Tamil to English.

Priyamvada's first book Stories of the True, an English translation of Jeyamohan's short stories collection Aram, was published in 2022 by Juggernaut Books. Take Me Back, her translation of A. Muttulingam’s short story Ennai Thirupi Edu was published in Spillwords Press, an online literary magazine.

In 2022, Priyamvada was selected to participate in ALTA Emerging Translator's Mentorship Program, an international program for emerging translators organized by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). As part of this, Priyamvada is translating Jeyamohan's novel Vellai Yaanai (White Elephant). For this translation work, she was awarded the PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant 2023.

Priyamvada names Jeyamohan, Ashokamitran and Tolstoy as her literary idols.
