Professor M. Subramoniam

M. Subramoniam (M. Subramonia Pillai). He was born on May 25, 1953. He is an English professor and translator from Nagercoil. He served as a lecturer and as the head of the English Department at South Travancore Hindu College, Nagercoil. He has translated important works. He has participated in folklore research along with scholars like A. K. Perumal.

Youth, Education

M. Subramoniam was born on May 25, 1953 in Azhagiapandiyapuram, Kanyakumari, to Mathevan Pillai and Valliyammal. Mathevan Pillai worked at the estates in Kanyakumari district.

M. Subramoniam studied in Azhagiapandiyapuram till the 9th grade and later finished his schooling in Nagercoil. He finished his Bachelor’s in Botany at Arignar Anna College, Aralvaimozhi. He later studied Master's in English at South Travancore Hindu College, Nagercoil, as his interest in the language piqued. He studied M.Phil in English at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, and a Master’s in Mass Communication at Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. He got his PhD from Tamil University, Tanjore.

He has also studied diploma in journalism and Indian culture.

Personal Life

M. Subramoniam's wife's name is Rajeswari. They have two sons; one works for the Dinamalar daily news magazine and the other works in the IT sector.

M. Subramoniam has been living in Nagercoil with his family since retirement.

Translation Works

M. Subramoniam as an educator, has coordinated and participated in many seminars on translation and public relations. He later collaborated with culturalists and historians to participate in research.

The famous story in the Kumari district, Thambimar, was written by his teacher, A. K. Perumal, in Tamil. In 1999, M. Subramoniam translated the story into English. It was published under the title “A Scorching Guile“ by the Institute of Asian Studies: G. John Samuel’s institution.

In 2004, M. Subramoniam translated an English book about Narayana Guru, written by K. Srinivasan, in Tamil. Tamilini published this book with Jeyamohan's foreword.
