Ilakkiyavattam (1963-1965) was a literary magazine run by Ka.Na. Subramaniam. It was known for its serious discussions on modern poetry and short stories. There was another magazine titled Ilakkiyavattam in Malaysia.

History

Ka.Na. Subramaniam, who led two magazines: Sooravali and Chandrodhayam, launched the magazine Ilakkiyavattam, on November 22, 1963, which was published twice a month. In the first issue of the editorial, he wrote, "Compliments from the celebrities are not required; awards and recommendations by Sahitya Akademi are not required. Critics and readers are ample for the literary standards to improve. I sincerely declare that Ilakkiyavattam has been formed to create a literary community in Tamil".

Ka. Naa. Subramanyam continually wrote in the Ezhuthu magazine, founded in 1959. Later, he withdrew from it. He started a rival magazine, Ilakkiyavattam. Ilakkiyavattam ceased publication with its 38th issue on April 30, 1965.

Content

Ka. Naa. Subramanyam has consistently expressed the idea that modern literature should become a movement. He wrote in the January 3, 1964, issue of Ilakkiyavattam, "Ilakkiyavattam will try to cover the world literary sphere, at least some parts of it, from time to time." Ilakkiyavattam continually wrote about literary writers, and translations around the world. Ezhuthu was a magazine during the same period, that wrote about the new poetry movement. Although poetry was rarely published in Ilakkiyavattam, it was Ilakkiyavattam that published the principles of modern poetry.

Ilakkiyavattam published separate special issues on C. Subramania Bharathiyar, Ku. Alagirisami, T. K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar and Ananda Coomaraswamy. Ilakkiyavattam, which published modern literary criticism, took over the literary recommendation work of Ka. Naa. Subramanyam. Ilakkiyavattam published a special issue on T. K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar, who approached traditional poetry on the basis of taste even though he severely attacked the academicians. The articles published in this issue were later published collectively as a novel named Illakiyathirku Or Iyakkam. This novel won the Sahitya Akademi award.

Publication

Ka. Naa. Subramanyam’s Ilakkiyavattam magazine was published as a collection by Sandhya Publications in 2004. Publication by K. A. Sachithanandham.

Literary Significance

Ilakkiyavattam has been acclaimed to date for its discussion of modern poetry, and review articles.
