C. P. Chitrarasu (11 April 1906 - 16 February 1978) was a politician, and speaker, and is considered to be a writer of the Dravidian movement. He was the former Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.

Birth, Education

C.P. Chitrarasu was born Chinnaraj, on 11 April 1906 in Kanchipuram to C.K. Beddhasamy Naidu and Lakshmi Ammal.

Personal Life

C.P. Chitrarasu had a daughter named Saraswathi, who married P.V. Sudarsan, the son of P. Varadarasulu Naidu. C.N. Annadurai presided over the marriage function.

Politics

Inspired by the Thanithamizh Iyakkam leader Ku.Mu. Annal Thango, Chinnaraj changed his name to Chitrarasu. He joined the Justice Party in 1930. Later he worked in the Dravidian movement led by E.V. Ramasamy Periyar. He joined the DMK when C.N. Annadurai formed the political party in 1949. He led the second phase of the Kallakudi struggle started by M. Karunanidhi to change the name of Dalmiyapuram. He ran various magazines for Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

In the 1957 parliamentary elections, he contested and lost the Tirupattur parliamentary constituency as the DMK candidate. He contested and lost the Chennai Port Assembly constituency in the 1962 Assembly elections as well. In 1964, he was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council. He served as its chairman from 23-04-1970 to 20-04-1976. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, Chitrarasu participated in the 16th Commonwealth Conference held in Australia in October 1970. Due to a disagreement with M. Karunanidhi, he left the DMK in 1976 and joined the AIADMK.

Journalism

  • On August 22, 1952, he started the weekly magazine, Theepori.
  • On May 3, 1956, he started the magazine, Theechudar.
  • In 1959, he served as the editor of the journal Ina Muzhakkam.
  • Chitrarasu, who was a member of the DMK Executive and General Committees, also served as the editor of its official journal, Nam Nadu.

Film Career

Chitrarasu worked as a screenwriter for Modern Theaters Film Company for a year in the 1950s. He wrote the script for the 1960 film Aada Vanda Deivam.

Literary life

Chitrarasu wrote plays and short essays for the party campaign. In his journals, he wrote short histories of European politicians and thinkers. He wrote texts for Dravidian movement policy propaganda written in a stage hyperbole style.

C.P. Chitrarasu passed away on 16 February 1978.

Memories, Biographies

In 1989, the Vellore District Collector's Office was named after C.P. Chitrarasu.

Literary Significance

C.P. Chitrarasu is considered one of the writers created by the Dravidian movement. His Vishakkoppai[1] was a popular play.
